Vegetarian Lasagna

Everything is mindful about a healthy kitchen, this is why we want to share some of our favorite recipes each issue. If you would like to see some of your recipes published in Mindful Magazine, contact us. You could be our next Healthy Kitchen guest!


* Boil water to cook your noodle of choice (whole    wheat, brown rice, or quinoa).
* While noodles are cooking, cut up your vegetables of choice. Suggestions: spinach, brussel sprouts,         yellow and green zucchini, mushroom. Have the kids choose some of the vegetable.
* When noodles are done cooking and water is strained, layer bottom of a casserole dish with a single    layer of noodles, ricotta cheese, vegetables, spaghetti sauce, mozzarella cheese, and    continue three    levels or until baking pan is full.
* Bake in oven at 400 for 15-20 minutes, or until vegetables are soft. Each oven may vary.

Peace: Your Souls Purpose

There are some great practitioners that have graced us with their presence and today I had the pleasure of going to Reverent Lisa Aschoff's meditation course — Peace: Your Souls Purpose.
She has been traveling and found a few locations in the Portland Oregon Metro area to share her gifts.

Today I entered her class with an open mind. I left feeling at peace, full of love and light. I enjoyed her presence. Her guidance of spiritual growth was exceptional.

Karen Asbury on CranioSacral


Without giving our recent interview away, I'd like to talk a little about CranioSacral, but first I'd like to introduce Karen Asbury, LMT LMP. I recently interviewed Karen Asbury because she has a unique set of skills, as a massage therapist and bodyworker she incorporates Reiki and CranioSacral Therapy; integrative bodywork as she calls it. 

When I first met her she was working at a crystal store, she offered me a 15 minute massages as she was promoting herself in her community. Since then, she has developed a very successful business and has become a professional resource of support for her community. 

“When I received Karen's Cranial Sacral treatment, I became instantly relaxed.” Wiesje Brion. 

I recently had the wonderful opportunity to interview Karen about CranioSacral and why it felt so good. 

Karen replied:
“It’s really tapping into your own body’s wisdom, listening, and following. Clients drop into a very relaxed state quite quickly by accessing that slower rhythm in the body, because the cranioSacral rhythm is slower than our breathing, or certainly our heart rate, or any other system that we have. It is a very subtle rhythm that we are generally not consciously aware of, whether one knows of its existence or not. As I am following that rhythm my client’s body notices and goes, “Oh, this is a profound healing state I'm getting into.

She explains that during a CranioSacral treatment, cranial bones may also be released so they can move freely and without restriction, which also affects change in the dura mater and ease in the cranioSacral rhythm.

… In fact it releases the pressure in the brain and in the spinal bones...Part of CranioSacral is working the flow of the dura mater therefore creating change with the bones and the sutchers between the cranial bones can get restricted; so it is a release of pressure from the CranioSacral treatment.

Edible Flowers

Summer is a great time to incorporate flowers in your daily recipes. Eating edible flowers are nothing to sneeze at, it is a very old tradition and is such a beautiful addition to summer creations. Flowers have wonderful medicinal properties. It is common to add flowers into salads, ice cubes and deserts. Here are a few recipes to get you started. Try some of your own recipes and add edible flowers. How will you use flowers in your recipes?

Lavender
Some edible flowers to try in recipes below are carnations, chamomile, chives, chrysanthemum, cornflower, dandelions, fuchsia, gardenia, gladiolus, hibiscus, impatiens, jasmine, lavender, lilac, marigold, pansy, snap dragon, sunflowers, squash, or violets.
  1. Apply a cloth soaked in violet leaf and/or flower tea to the back of the neck to treat headaches.
  2. Lay edible flowers in an ice tray with water and freeze in the freezer overnight. Use to decorate and cool any drink.
  3. Mix a variety of edible flowers with leafy greens for a delightful floral salad.
  4. Garnish flowers over a bowl of vanilla ice cream and fresh fruit.
  5. Garnish any dish – especially deserts with edible flowers.

    What Foods provide Vitamin B's?


    Our body needs vitamin B complex, especially since the aging process decreases our ability to absorb nutrients. Vitamin B complex consists of thiamine B1, riboflavin B2, niacin B3, pantothenic acid B5, pyridoxine B6, biotin B7, folic acid or folate B9, and cobalamin B12, and in some countries pangamic acid B15 and amygdalin-nitrilosides or laetrile B17. 

    Women who boost their intake of  B6, B9, and B12 can reduce their risk of heart attack by as much as 50%!




    Thiamine or B1 is found in nuts, seeds, whole grains, legumes, beans, egg yolk, avocados, green leafy vegetables, cod, and scallops.

    Riboflavin is found in natural sources of B2 which are found in almonds, scallops, pink salmon, spinach, dairy, mackerel, wheatgerm, eggs, and oats. 
    *High concentration of B2 can reduce the effectiveness of the anti-cancer drug methotrexate.

    Niacintry it's natural source of B3 from large fish like tuna, salmon, swordfish, trout, and mackerel. 
    *Niacin may reduce the toxic side effects on the heart tissue of the anti-cancer drug adriamycin without reducing its effectiveness in the treatment of cancer.

    Pantothenic, B5 is found in avocados, chicken, mushrooms, trout, peanuts, wheat germ, wheat bran, lentils, pink salmon, and oysters.

    Pyridoxine, Some foods that contain B6 are raw milk, wheat germ, wheat bran, bananas, chicken avocados, and tuna.
    *Beware of processed foods, they destroy vitamin B6. 

    Biotin is your B7and is found in spinach, avocados, broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, potatoes, legumes, nuts, pork, organ meats, chicken, fish, egg yolks, milk, cheese, royal jelly, soy, corn, barley and wheat bran.

    Folic Acid, foods with vitamin B9 are deep leafy greens, broccoli, asparagus, lima beans, sprouts, wheatgerm, nuts, tuna, mushrooms, and dates. 
    * Approximately 1/3 of pregnant women have a folate deficiencies, which can lead to birth defects.

    Cobalamin, B12 can be found in meat, fish, free range eggs, yogurt, soybeans, seaweed, kelp, sunflower seeds, bananas, and pollen. 
    *Vegans and vegetarians should ensure this supplement in their daily diet. Vegetarian foods containing B12 may not be absorbed.

    Pangamic acid also known as B15. B15 is found in whole grain, brown rice, wheat germ, wheat grass, nut, seeds, and apricot kernels. 
    *B12 is used by athletes in Europe to improve performance. Although sold as Dimetyl Glycine in the U.S., it is controversial due to lack of research. Avoid during pregnancy and while nursing due to lack of data.

    Amygdalin-Nitrilosides also known as Laetrile; is B17. Find B17 in apricots, peaches, plums, apple seeds, almonds, raspberries, cranberries, blackberries, blueberries, sprouted seeds, alfalfa, mug beans, millet, lentils, garbanzo beans, wheat grass, and buckwheat. 
    *Eat sparingly, controversy as to whether it is toxic or curative, because intestinal bacteria may activate the release of cyanide. Ask your doctor if you should avoid or reduce these food from your diet while pregnant or nursing; due to lack of research of toxicity levels.

    Ancient Healing

    Part I

    Many ancient cultures have been know to pass down their healing rituals verbally from generation to generation. If there was written knowledge it had been destroyed by the process of nature or the destruction of man. Rarely has there been survival of the ancient secrets of time.  


    Ayurveda is one of these ancient methods that has survived many wars and prejudices and natural disasters over thousands and thousands of years. Ayurveda is known as one of the oldest healing methods, if not the oldest know to modern man. Much of it's teachings are of holistic care. The word "Ayurveda" is a Sanskrit word meaning "Knowledge of Life". Ayurveda is an ancient Indian system of holistic medicine that seeks to bring balance specific to each individual, instead of a generic fix. It is a practice of both curative and preventive measures, encouraging optimal physical, mental and spiritual well-being. It aims to prevent unnecessary suffering and encourages us to live a long, healthy lifestyle. Ayurveda ranges in healing philosophies from surgery to energy work and everything in between.


    In fact there are eight branches of Ayurveda: 
    1. Káyachikitsá Internal Medicine: Focus is on the body, mind and soul connection as a whole. Psychosomatic theory recognizes that the mind can create illness in the body and vice versa.
    2. Shálákya Tantra ~ Ears, Nose, and Throat: A study of approximately 72 eye diseases, surgical procedures for all eye disorders such as cataracts and eyelid diseases, and also diseases of the ears, nose, and throat. 
    3. Vishagara–Vairodh ~ Tantra Toxicology: Pertains to air and water pollution, toxins in animals, minerals, vegetables, and epidemics, as well as study of their antidotes.
    4. Kaumára Bhritya ~ Pediatrics: This branch of medicine focuses on prenatal and postnatal care of the baby and mother. Including the methods of conception, choosing the child’s gender, intelligence, constitution, childhood diseases, and midwifery.
    5. Shalyá Tantra ~ Surgery: Yes, surgery has been in practice for thousands of years. It is not a recent practice although many old practices were lost or hidden. Allowing western medical philosophy to rebirth this practice. We are only touching the surface of what is in the ancient Ayurvedic practice.
    6. Bhúta Vidyá ~ Psychiatry: This entire philosophy analyses the mind and it's diseases as well as the alterations with herbs, diet, yogic therapies of breathing and mantras, and even demonic possession.
    7. Vájikarana ~ Aphrodisiacs: This is the branch of fertility, infertility, sexual energy, spiritual development and their common ground.
    8. Rasáyana ~ Rejuvenation: The practice of prevention and longevity. In order to develop longevity, ethics and virtuous living must be embraced.

        As you can see Ayurveda is a whole body, mind and soul practice. It is not a religion, although many times confused as such because of the connection with spirituality and medicine.

        Chief Editor, Wiesje Brion is determined to write about someone you know who is amazing! What do they do that sends you into "awe"? Is it a neighbor, a friend, a relative, or someone you hardly know? We want to hear from you, all of you! Your story could end up in our Mindful Magazine and on our websites.

        Submission: Email an original, double-spaced, text file, about an amazing person that has changed your life and tell us why. Photos are encouraged, please make sure that they are your own.         Mindful Wellness

        Wellness in mind and body is like the pendulum affect. Your body is in constant homeostasis (a relatively stable state of equilibrium or a tendency toward such a state between the different but interdependent elements or groups of elements of an organism, population, or group). Merriam-Webster* Living well isn't having luxuries money can buy, although it may seem as if it were easier if we just had this or that. Living well is being happy with what you do have and knowing what that is, is key.

        We at Mindful want to guide you to wellness. Ask yourself, “What brings me back to balance?” Does a monthly massage get you back on track? Breathing in the clean air on a mountain top on a sunny day? Sand in your toes, maybe you can't go to the beach every weekend but you can make yourself a Zen garden in your yard. Maybe, you like to learn new things and have been dying to take a nutrition class but just keep putting it off. If going to the gym is your thing, make time for it. Sometimes, Space Clearing or Energy work is just what you need to start fresh.


        Find what makes you; You on your very best day and remember to nurture that part of yourself with what ever it is that brings you balance. In doing so be mindful of change; mindful of change in the mind, in the body and all around you. How does season affect you? Do you need something different in the winter than in the summer? How about a warm soothing body treatment? A trip to the Chiropractor may be the trick to getting your health stable. Do you need to change your diet or supplement with herbal remedies? Knowing yourself may take a little mindfulness on your part but your body and mind will thank you for it. 

        Remember what the flight attendants says just before take off … “secure your own mask before helping others.” Take care of yourself before you take care of others. This is true in life and will keep you at full strength. Give your body and mind what it needs and it will take care of you. You deserve that!
